Writing An Imperfect World

“I don’t write about perfect societies–utopias first because they’re boring and second because I don’t think they’re attainable by imperfect humans.”

Octavia Butler A Handful of Earth, p. 143

I’m not Octavia Butler. I am a dark fantasy writer who delves into various possibilities of our current world. Suppose you were a child wishing to watch or read about people who look like you or have the same issues in this society in fantasy or science fiction. In that case, I think this blog speaks to you.

In 2021, we are starting to see more images of people of color and the LGBTQ+ community. However, we still have a long way to go. It was worse when Ms. Butler grew up and was forced to watch movies, where POCs were portrayed as maids, custodians, or criminals, or the LGBTQ+ community didn’t exist at all. It is getting better thanks to our pioneer Ms. Butler. Yet, we still have a long way to go. I hope my stories will inspire you to imagine worlds with us included, no matter how imperfect the world is.
